A winter storm warning is in effect from noon today till noon tomorrow. A Pacific storm is coming from the West and will bring snow this afternoon with the heaviest snowfall coming tonight. We are expected to get up to an inch an hour at some points through-out the night, with a total expected accumulation of up to 2 feet!

This is music to our ears here in the high county, this is what we have all been waiting for! If you are traveling to or from the mountains be extremely careful and expect road closures at times through-out the evening. As I rode the bus into town this morning I saw all the happy people at the Breckenridge gondola getting ready to shred and watch the Dew Tour today. I have to say I was a bit jealous that I wasn't going to be out there... :) A great spot to catch all the action is at the T-Bar Restaurant and Bar on Peak 8, right near the Dew Tour Village!

Snow fell on Breckenridge last night, not as much as we were all hoping for, but some. More is on the way for today, I see the snow clouds rolling in over the top of the peaks that make up Breckenridge Ski Resort.

Hi Folks, we at WoodWinds are happy to be back at our office on 300 North Main Street!

If you didn't know, we had been at our satellite office on Four O'clock Rd. all summer while our Main St. office was being slightly remodeled. It's that time, Breckenridges' opening weekend for the 2011-2012 ski season! The gondola will start running at 8:00am on Friday and the lifts will start turning at 9am. The first 1,111 people will receive free cupcakes Friday morning for Breck's 50th Birthday! At 11am The T-Bar opens and thanks to Budweiser there will be a ceremonial keg tapping of the 50th Anniversary Ale Keg, a special brew by Budweiser just for Breckenridge's anniversary season. It's going to be a fun filled opening day in Breckenridge, don't miss it!

Winter Weather Advisory

Hello October 17th and winter weather advisory! An advisory is in effect until 3pm today with an expected 4-7 inches! This is good news for the A Basin and Loveland, two ski areas that opened up last week. I had the lovely opportunity of skiing A Basin on Sunday, the “white ribbon of death” as they call it. It was a beautiful 56 degrees and sunny which brought many ambitious skiers and boarders out to test their new equipment and just have some plain old fun! Just 18 more day’s until Keystone has its’ opening day, so get ready and call us at WoodWinds if you need a place to stay for the weekend, we are just 15 miles away!

Arapahoe Basin is Open!!

Abasin started up its' ski lift's yesterday, October 13th for the 2011-2012 season! If you are itching to ski, now is your chance. With an 18'' base, Abasin has 1 of their 7 lift's open with packed powder/machine made snow conditions. The High Divide terrain park is open as well as the intermediate run, High Noon. So what are you waiting for, get out there and enjoy these early season snow conditions, even if it is only for a run or two!

Snow on the Peaks!

I woke up this morning to a snow dusted porch and snow on the Peaks of the Ten Mile Range, what a beautiful site it was!

Winter is on it's way, Wolf Creek ski area opens this Saturday with 3 feet of snow, wow! As for Vail Resorts, Keystone will be kicking off the openings in just 28 days on November 4th. Breckenridge will be opening on 11/11/11, celebrating it's 50th Anniversary this year! Vail's opening day is set for November 18th, so get your skis tuned up folks, we will be on the mountain before you know it! Enjoy the weekend!

Pumpkin Carving

Fall is my favorite time of the year. I'm a sucker for apple cider, warm donuts, hay rides, warm sweaters and pumpkin picking! Below are a list of pumpkin carving tips, personal and others gathered farm various websites:

First you have to pick a pumpkin that is nice and round, preferably a flat front and I like mine tall!
Pumpkins lighter in color and softer are easier to carve but will not last as long.
Draw a circle around the bottom (around the stem) cut along the circle and angle your carving utensil towards the center, so your top doesn't fall in!
Clean out all seeds and stringy stuff! Scrape the pulp away from your carving area.
Weather your using a pattern or drawing your own, use something with a pointed tip to poke small holes along the lines. I think this makes it alot easier to cut out the smaller pieces.
Prevent your final project from drying out by placing petroleum jelly on the cut edges of your carving.
Soak or spray the pumpkin with water mixed with a small amount of bleach, this will help ward of mold and insects that speed up the deterioration process.

Fall is Here!

Are you looking for something to do this lovely fall weekend? I suggest taking a drive, bike ride or hike and take in the beautiful fall foliage in Colorado. There are some great places to do this right here in Breckenridge. Take Bores Pass Road up to the trail head, park your car and follow the Bakers tank trail through the tunnel of Aspens, it is one of the most beautiful things I have ever seen! Bring a picnic basket, a blanket and have an amazing lunch with great views of Breckenridge and the beautiful Aspen Trees that have turned into a beautiful golden yellow, don't forget your camera!

Work with Clay

Looking for something to do in the late afternoon? Try working with clay! The Quandary Antiques Cabin has an open studio this Thursday 9/22 2:00pm-6:00pm. There is a $12 drop in fee or you can buy a $100 punch card with 10 visits. Work on a project of your choice with limited instruction, the drop in fee includes a 1/3 bag of clay and the punch pass includes one bag of clay, bisque firings and 20% off future workshops. If you think you may need a little more instruction try out the Intro to Clay class for adults, this class is also offered on Thursday 9/22 from 6:00pm-8:00pm at the Quandary Antiques Cabin. This weekend marks the 24th Annual Rubber Duck Races in Breckenridge, Colorado! On September 3rd, at the Riverwalk Center a series of 3 different races will occur. At 1:00 PM the Kids Duck Dash will take off, at 2:00 PM the Business Battle Duck Race will take off and then at 3:00 PM is The great Rubber Duck Race. You can purchase your duck at various places around town or online at The Summit Foundation, ducks vary in prices. Thousands of people will be here to participate in the family friendly activities this weekend, help the Summit Foundation reach their goal to drop 10,000 ducks into Blue River this weekend!

USA Pro Cycling Challenge is Almost Here

Happy Friday! I am writing today to remind you all of the USA Pro Cycling Challenge that is coming to Breckenridge next weekend! This is a huge event for our small ski town and we are extremely happy to host such an event! The Stage 5 finish will be right here in Breckenridge at the intersection of Main Street and Wellington Road! On Saturday August 27th the race is expected to finish between 3:30 and 4:00 pm, so be prepared to be where you want to be by 2:00 pm. There will be many road closures throughout the day so traveling will be difficult, I would recommend traveling by bicycle or using the Summit County Free Ride! The racers will be cruising into town from over Swan Mountain Road. I personally would take advantage of our bike path and beat the crowds and watch as racers fly down Swan Mountain, racers will be coming in at speeds up to 60 MPH!
